For over 30 years, CALD has served as the region’s leading platform where political parties, policymakers, civil society, and international partners work together to address today’s democratic challenges and shape tomorrow’s opportunities.
CALD was inaugurated in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1993 through the support of then Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai and South Korean democracy leader Kim Dae-Jung.
Recognizing the growing need for regional cooperation among liberal and democratic movements, visionary leaders established CALD as the first and only regional alliance of liberal and democratic political parties in Asia.
Over the years, CALD has grown into a diverse alliance representing political parties, democratic organizations, and individual leaders across Asia.
Its leadership has rotated among respected member parties from Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Mongolia, and other democratic movements, reflecting CALD’s commitment to shared leadership, regional representation, and collaboration.
Today, CALD continues to expand its network while remaining focused on promoting democracy, political freedom, and responsible governance.
